Red-bellied Black Snake

Often given a fearsome reputation the Red Bellied Black Snake although venomous, would be regarded as more “passive” than the nervous Eastern Brown Snake. Red Bellies grow to around 1.8 metres however the more common average size is closer to 1.4 metres. An easily distinguishable snake with its typically black dorsal color and bright red belly it is often found in good numbers in moist or riparian associated habitat types. Its defensive posture is to flatten its neck and move the forebody in a sideways motion. It tends to favour frogs as a food source but will devour mammals and other reptiles regularly.

The Ipswich region presents plenty of habitat opportunities for the Red Bellied Black Snake. Suburbs where Snake Catcher Ipswich has captured good numbers include Booval, Yamanto, Pine Mountain, Kholo and Tivoli. One notable capture was a large 1.6 metre specimen we removed from the Commonwealth Bank Building in the Ipswich Mall.

Eastern Brown Snake

The second most toxic land snake in the world the Eastern Brown Snake features prominently amongst the snakes commonly seen throughout the Ipswich region. With reliable records for this species in excess of 2 metres in length the Eastern Brown Snake has an average length of around 1500mm. The colour variation in this species is quite remarkable with the name Brown Snake not always ringing true. Numerous morphological variants have been recorded for this species included banded and dual colour forms. Like all snakes it is quick to recluse but is less tolerant of human interference than other species often resulting in the snake adopting its classic “S” shaped posture if pressed in any way. This species has a varied diet which includes most mammal but it will readily consume other reptiles small enough for It to eat.

As snake catcher Ipswich has serviced the area for over 20 years our experience with Eastern Browns has seen captures within all suburbs of Ipswich. Even inner city locations have yielded captures over the years. Notable suburbs with more frequent captures include Raceveiw, Ripley, Brassall, North Ipswich, Karalee and Bundamba.

Coastal Carpet Python

The largest and most frequently encountered species of snake in the Ipswich region the Coastal Carpet Python is the most commonly captured snake by Snake Catcher Ipswich. Its large size coupled with its tendency to target prey species that are also common around suburban homes make it a regular visitor and often a cause for concern. Reaching lengths of over 3 metres the largest specimen captured in Ipswich by Snake Catcher Ipswich was 3.95 metres and weighed over 14 kgs! Large snakes can take small dogs and cats but are notorious for consuming caged guinea pigs or birds where they are not housed in snake proof caging. A more naturally occurring diet would consist of rodents and possums.

There isn’t a suburb of Ipswich we have not caught a Carpet Python from. A highly successful species more regular captures occur in Karalee, Pine Mountain, Springfield and Redbank Plains.

Common Tree Snake

This slender, fast moving snake is found in all suburbs and occupies a range of niches including highly urbanised localities as well more naturally occurring vegetated localities. Females are larger and more robust than males reaching lengths over 1.8 metres. The largest specimen captured by Snake catcher Ipswich was 2.150 metres and was in the bed of a Goodna home. Common tree snakes can consume frogs and lizard’s species and are known to have exploited the abundant introduced Asian House Gecko. This may account for the high numbers often found in suburban areas.

Like Coastal Carpet Pythons there isn’t a suburb of Ipswich we haven’t captured this species from. Suburbs such as Sadliers Crossing, Walkuraka, Brassall and Moores Pocket where the Bremer River passes through all contain good numbers of this species.
